چکیده

Since 1968, three spontaneous 4x melons (Cucumis melo L.) plants were discovered in our field or greenhouse plantings. Two were found in the cultivar Planters Jumbo and one in the virescent marker C879-52. Each of these 4x plants had rounded cotyledons, shorter internodes, thicker stems and leaves, more hairs, and smaller fruits, with larger stem and blossom scars, than their 2x counterparts. Also, their flowers, pollen grains, stomates, and seeds were larger. The discovery of a 4x virescent plant in 1987 allows easier germplasm transfer between ploidy levels. Morphological characteristics of 2x and 4x melons will allow identification without need for chromosome

Apoptosis regulation in tetraploid cancer cells.

Tetraploidy can result in cancer-associated aneuploidy. As shown here, freshly generated tetraploid cells arising due to mitotic slippage or failed cytokinesis are prone to undergo Bax-dependent mitochondrial membrane permeabilization and subsequent apoptosis. Knockout of Bax or overexpression of Bcl-2 facilitated the survival of tetraploid cells at least as efficiently as the p53 or p21 knocko...

Medieval emergence of sweet melons, Cucumis melo (Cucurbitaceae).

BACKGROUND Sweet melons, Cucumis melo, are a widely grown and highly prized crop. While melons were familiar in antiquity, they were grown mostly for use of the young fruits, which are similar in appearance and taste to cucumbers, C. sativus. The time and place of emergence of sweet melons is obscure, but they are generally thought to have reached Europe from the east near the end of the 15th c...

Melons: Health Hazard through Contamination with Pathogenic Bacteria - BfR opinion 021/2013, 09 August 2013

Melons can come into contact with bacteria, viruses or parasites at any stage of the food supply chain from production and transport to preparation in private households. Pathogens can be transferred from the skin to the flesh of the fruit when the melons are cut. At warm temperatures, in particular Salmonella, Listeria and EHEC can easily multiply on the flesh which is low in acidity. Accordin...

Use of Cucumis metuliferus as a Rootstock for Melon to Manage Meloidogyne incognita.

Root-knot nematode-susceptible melons (Cantaloupe) were grown in pots with varying levels of Meloidogyne incognita and were compared to susceptible melons that were grafted onto Cucumis metuliferus or Cucurbita moschata rootstocks. In addition, the effect of using melons as transplants in nematode-infested soil was compared to direct seeding of melons in nematode-infested soil. There were no di...

Use of hydrogen peroxide in combination with nisin, sodium lactate and citric acid for reducing transfer of bacterial pathogens from whole melon surfaces to fresh-cut pieces.

Hydrogen peroxide (2.5%) alone or hydrogen peroxide (1%) in combination with nisin (25 microg/ml), sodium lactate (1%), and citric acid (0.5%) (HPLNC) were investigated as potential sanitizers for reducing Escherichia coli O157:H7 or Listeria monocytogenes populations on whole cantaloupe and honeydew melons. Whole cantaloupes inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes at 5.27 and 4.07...
